GEORGE TOWN: The development of a cable car project on Penang Hill must take into account the importance of protecting the area's unique and unique cultural heritage, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
In his speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for the project, Anwar said he was reminded of American author, Mark Twain's observation of Washington DC.
"(Twain observed) that that development must take into account cultural aspects.
"When we talk about culture, we should not be culturally barren because a beautiful city is not known merely for its concrete jungle but must be culturally vibrant and environmentally friendly."
Also present were Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow and Hartasuma Sdn Bhd Group executive director Tan Sri Ravindran Menon.
Anwar said he hoped Hartasuma, which is developing the project, would ensure Penang Hill's environment and cultural heritage are protected.
"Penang Hill is rich with history, not only for Penang and Malaysia but in this region. "Even visitors from abroad, such as Thailand, also come here for educational purposes," he added.
Anwar also said that even though a cable car would be built on the hill, people must still be able to hike up the hill to do so.
"There must be space to encourage the young to hike up like I used to during my younger days."
The Penang Hill cable car project is expected to cost around RM250 million and will enhance connectivity and accessibility to one of Malaysia's most iconic and historical tourist destinations.
Work on the cable car system will be completed by 2026.
Penang Hill is a major tourist attraction renowned for its diverse ecology, rich history, famed hiking trails and panoramic views at its peak.
In 2023, Penang Hill received 1.67 million visitors, edging towards its pre-pandemic peak of 1.9 million visitors in 2019.
The cable car will serve as a gateway to the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
