KUALA LUMPUR: More than 1,200 people gathered at the Batu Caves temple complex near here today for a 10th International Day of Yoga event hosted by the High Commission of India.

The participants included diplomats, government officials, Indian community leaders, Malaysians, and members of the Indian diaspora.

Indian High Commissioner B.N. Reddy said the theme for this year's event was "Yoga for Self and Society".

He said International Day of Yoga had been observed annually on June 21 since 2014, when it was recognised by the United Nations.

"With the support of 40 partner organisations in Malaysia, the Indian High Commission held yoga events in 75 locations in Malaysia last year, from June 21 to the end of October," he said.

"Yoga promotes oneness of mind, body and soul, while for the society at large, it brings harmony between humanity and nature.

"The ancient Indian science of yoga is well known for its benefits for the physical and mental well-being of individuals and at the same time, is a sustainable way for ensuring harmony of mankind with nature.

"I am confident that with your support we continue to spread the inherent power of yoga to connect, and also promote its numerous benefits to physical, mental and spiritual well-being," he added.
