LIPIS: A motorcyclist, 24, who had stopped by the roadside while on the way to his hometown for Hari Raya Aidiladha, was killed when a lorry hit him today.

Mohamad Suhamel Ismail died at the scene at Km25 of Jalan Lipis-Benta here at 5.30am.

Lipis police chief Superintendent Ismail Man said the lorry driver, 29, from Klang, was travelling to deliver mattresses to Tanah Merah, Kelantan, while Suhamel was riding from his house in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur, to Gua Musang.

"Upon reaching the Benta roundabout, the lorry driver tried to avoid hitting a car parked in the middle of the road due to an earlier accident.

"The lorry swerved towards the road shoulder and hit Suhamel, who is believed to have stopped to rest.

"The motorcycle was killed on the spot while the lorry turned turtle."

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department public relations officer Zulfadli Zakaria said eight firemen from the Kuala Lipis station were deployed to extricate the victim's remains trapped below the lorry.
