KOTA KINABALU: Scuba divers have been urged to adhere to the laws and act as stewards of the marine environment, said Sabah Dive Squad Club president Sim Fui.
Sim made these calls following a recent incident in Semporna in which a scuba diver was caught on video using a speargun to kill fish.
The actions of the diver, he said, do not reflect the ethics and practices of responsible diving, which emphasize conservation and respect for marine life.
"This act is not only illegal, as clarified by the Fisheries Department, but also goes against the core values and principles that our club upholds," he said in a statement.
Sim also raised concerns that using a speargun while scuba diving poses significant safety risks.
"Such actions could accidentally harm other divers in the vicinity, creating a dangerous underwater environment.
"The safety of all divers is paramount, and reckless behavior of this kind cannot be tolerated."
He said the club, which has about 100 members to date, is committed to promoting sustainable diving practices and educating our members and the public on the importance of preserving our natural marine environments.
"Let this incident serve as a reminder of our collective responsibility to protect and cherish the underwater world for future generations."
Meanwhile, Sabah Parks director Dr. Maklarin Lakim said the incident appears to have happened near Mabul Island.
"The island is located outside of the Sipadan Island Park.
"It may violate regulations under tourism guidelines, but it does not violate our Parks Enactment."
