KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has promised firm action to address the actions of extremist groups and provocateurs disrupting national security.

In a national address aired live today, Anwar said a meeting has been held with relevant authorities, including the police and other security team to discuss the matter.

"For the past few weeks, the country has been shocked by several incidents of violence that have claimed the lives of our security forces and the actions of extremist groups inciting unrest.

"I want to assure you that I have held meetings with the security forces and that we will act firmly against these groups.

"God willing (with the meeting and necessary actions), the situation will become calmer and more controlled," he said.

Anwar added that there were efforts to disrupt the peace in the country which is currently stable (politically) and experiencing promising economic growth."

On Friday, two policemen were killed, and another wounded when a masked intruder stormed the Ulu Tiram police station in Johor Baru in the pre-dawn attack.

The dead were Constable Muhamad Shafiq Ahmad Said, 24, and Constable Ahmad Azza Fahmi Azhar, 22.()

The following day, two men were arrested when they tried to trespass into Istana Negara. A parang was found in the vehicle they were in.

Yesterday, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had said police were investigating whether the recent spate of incidents were isolated or part of a coordinated plan.
