KUCHING: A new international airport will be constructed here to support the rapidly growing aviation industry in Sarawak.

Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the Kuching International Airport (LTAK) is becoming increasingly congested, causing the existing facilities to be unable to accommodate the rising number of passengers.

"Therefore, it is time for us to develop a new airport, especially since we aim to make Kuching a hub for aviation, not only for passengers, but also as a cargo hub as we already have a port hub."

He said this in the lobby of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly today. Abang Johari said the location for the new airport has been identified and he will announce it soon.

Regarding the funding for building the new airport, he said the Sarawak government will discuss with Malaysia Airport Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to see if they are interested in becoming partners in developing the project.
