KUCHING: The Sarawak Museum Department is set to conduct comprehensive studies to evaluate the Piasau Old Bridge's potential for gazettement as a historical monument in Miri, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak's Deputy Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Snowdan Lawan announced that the department will formulate an official plan for the refurbishment and development of the bridge in accordance with the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance of 2019.

"The Sarawak Museum Department issued the Notice of Preservation on Dec 1, 2015, under the Sarawak Cultural Heritage Ordinance 1993," he said in response to a question from Pujut assemblyman Adam Yii Siew Sang during the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session on Wednesday.

Snowdan added that according to Section 34(2) of the Sarawak Heritage Ordinance of 2019, owners or lawful occupants are authorised to undertake restoration efforts.

They are also eligible to apply for a permit from the Sarawak Museum Department, allowing them to carry out the necessary restoration works outlined in Section 36.
