KUCHING: A total of 657 citizenship applications for children and individuals, aged 21 and below, at the Sarawak National Registration Department from 2018 to 2023, have been decided upon, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Sarawak Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah said the department received a total of 1,403 citizenship applications involving children and individuals aged 21 and below during this six-year period.

"Out of this total, 657 applications, or 46.8 per cent, have received decisions, while 746 applications, or 53.2 per cent, are still being processed.

"For the period from Jan to March 2024, a total of 50 applications have been received, with three (six per cent) applications already decided upon, while 47 (94 per cent) are still being processed," she said.

She made these remarks while responding to a question from Lingga State Assemblywoman, Dayang Noorazah Awang Sohor, during the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) session on Wednesday.

Fatimah said the pending applications would be brought to the Special Citizenship Committee Meeting under Article 15A of the Federal Constitution in the upcoming sessions.
