BINTANGOR: Sarawak is poised to increase its local rice production, thereby mitigating future risks of rice shortages, the Sarawak Public Communications Unit reported.

Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier's Department (Bumiputera Law and Customs) Datuk Jefferson Jamit Ijang said he was confident following the success of a pilot hybrid rice cultivation project along Sungai Padi, Bintangor.

The project, covering 25 hectares and undertaken by Onemas Agriculture Sdn Bhd, employs high-quality rice breeds capable of yielding three harvests per year. This pilot in the Meradong district, still in its trial phase, is touted as successful.

The Bukit Goram assemblyman made these remarks after a working visit to the Hybrid Rice Cultivation Processing Plant in the area, highlighting the state's potential for agricultural advancement.
