KUALA KUBU BARU: Kuala Kubu Baharu voters have expressed hope for the constituency to be more developed and able to attract more tourists.

A retired officer of the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council, Abdul Ghani Shukor, 63, said there are many locations for outdoor activities and extreme sports.

However, he said, the lack of promotion stunted Kuala Kubu Baharu's potential to be a big tourist destination.

"I hope the next elected representative will develop Kuala Kubu Baharu into a more lively town.

"Kuala Kubu Bharu is located in Hulu Selangor. Of course, when we hear Hulu, one might think that most of the places are rural and empty village areas.

"But here, there are places for many outdoor activities such as paragliding, hiking, water rafting and even waterfall," he said when approached by the New Straits Times (NST).

He said that tourism and infrastructure developments could help constituents by increasing job opportunities.

Meanwhile, checks made by NST show that a small number of political flags have been raised in several areas of Kuala Kubu Baharu, just as the nomination day for the N.06 by-election approaches.

During today's Friday sermon at Masjid Jamek Ar-Rahimah, here, the imam reminded constituents to be kind to one another regardless of their political alignments.

The imam said the mosque must be free from any political agendas as it is regarded as a building of peace.

He reminded everyone not to bring items that symbolise any political parties into the mosque.

Meanwhile, a retired military personnel who refused to be named expressed hopes that the candidates would always take note of the residents' wellbeing.

"I don't mind whoever wins the by-election as long as he or she takes good care of the people.

"But personally, of course it would be great to have a Muslim because through them, we can spread the good teachings of Islam.

"Of course the previous assemblyman (Lee Kee Hiong) contributed a lot for the people here such as organising community programmes.

"As I said, we have no issues with whoever wins Kuala Kubu Bharu as long as they put the people first," he said.

The Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election is being held following the death of its incumbent, Lee on March 21.

Perikatan Nasional (PN) will field Bersatu Hulu Selangor acting division chief Khairul Azhari Saut.

Pakatan Harapan (PH) will field DAP's Pang Sock Tao, who is also the press secretary to Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming.

There were 40,015 registered voters in Kuala Kubu Baharu last year with Malays making up 46.4 per cent of them followed by Chinese (30.7 per cent), Indians (18 per cent) and others (5 per cent).
