KUALA LUMPUR: Former Education Minister Prof Dr Maszlee Malik has urged the vice-chancellor of University Malaya (UM) to issue a public apology over a recent controversy surrounding a foreign professor's contentious remarks at the university.

In a Facebook post today, Maszlee criticised the university for inviting Bruce Gilley, a known advocate for Zionist views, who accused Malaysia of advocating for a second Holocaust against the Jewish population.

"How can someone who openly condemns Malaysia with slander and holds pro-Zionist views be invited to our most prestigious university (University Malaya)?" he wrote.

Maszlee emphasised the need for the university's leadership to take accountability for the incident, suggesting that the vice-chancellor should offer an apology to the public.

Additionally, he proposed that someone should step down from his position as a gesture of accountability and integrity in light of the situation.

Yesterday, the Higher Education Ministry directed UM to submit a report on the incident.

Higher Education Minister, Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir said that all events and activities involving the controversial figure should be cancelled immediately.
