KOTA KINABALU: The Queen Elizabeth II Hospital here will become a cardiology centre, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

It will be renamed the Sabah Cardiology Centre and will receive an allocation of RM80 million.

"The healthcare capacity in Sabah is quite limited. Many have to fly to Kuala Lumpur (for advanced treatment).

"In Sarawak, at the suggestion of Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg, we agreed to build a cancer centre in Kuching.

"For Sabah, the cardiology services at the hospital will include a heart specialist clinic, a non-invasive catheterisation laboratory and an operation theatre.

"There are three heart specialists and 120 nurses. Three more cardiologists will be added," he said at the national-level Madani Raya celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre here.

According to additional information provided by the Prime Minister's Department, the Queen Elizabeth II Hospital currently has 107 beds and a bed occupancy rate of 75 per cent.
