KUALA LUMPUR: Sixteen fatal accidents were reported around the country on the fourth day of Op Selamat 22 yesterday (April 11), a drop compared to 35 death cases recorded the day before.

Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department acting director, Datuk Mohd Nasri Omar, said a total of 1,288 road accidents cases were reported yesterday during the operation, which was launched in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

"Fatal accidents reported on the first day of Syawal on Wednesday may have occurred due to various factors, including people rushing out to celebrate Hari Raya, resulting in congested roads and accidents.

"Having that said, the number of death cases due to road accidents recorded yesterday (April 11) was much lower compared to the day before.

"This is possibly because many people did not go out for Hari Raya (on Wednesday) as they are resting returning to the city," he told Berita Harian today (April 12).

He said, police expect traffic will be heavy tomorrow as people will begin to return to the city.

"Tomorrow (April 13), I will go to Gua Musang to inspect the traffic flow there as the area is expected to experience severe congestion.

"In addition, traffic flow in Kuala Selangor is expected to be congested for those using the West Coast Expressway (WCE) because there are 15 traffic lights in Kuala Selangor" he said.

Mohd Nasri also advised to plan their travels to avoid getting caught in congestion.

Op Selamat, which started on Monday, is the police's nationwide road safety campaign for the Hari Raya festive period.

Police are focusing on curbing six key offences, including driving over the speed limit, running red lights, the use of mobile phones while driving, and misusing the emergency lane under this series of Op Selamat.
