SEMPORNA: Seven people were injured when a 200-metre long concrete bridge collapsed off Kampung Bangau-Bangau here last night.

A fish market also collapsed, a house was damaged and a motorcycle fell into the sea in the incident at 7.50pm.

The Fire and Rescue Department was alerted to the collapse at 8.03pm.

It earlier said that a girl and three men were injured.

However, district police chief Superintendent Mohd Farhan Lee said later there were seven victims altogether — five males and two females aged between 10 and 45 years old.

"All the victims, including three foreigners, sustained minor injuries and were treated by paramedics from the Fire and Rescue Department.

"They did not want to be taken to hospital. No fatalities have been reported," he said in a statement.

The depth of the sea at the time of the incident was about 1.5 metres.

Farhan also said the bridge was 200 metres long, and not 300 metres as reported earlier.

"A control post at the site has been set up to coordinate rescue operations and monitor the situation.

"The five occupants of a damaged wooden house (a man, his wife and three children) have been told to move to another house because the structure is unsafe."

People should not approach the area as they may impede operations, he added.

"Residents who have lost family members or have any information can contact the Semporna police station chief (inspector Mustapha Abdul Majid) at 010- 5517617 or 089-782020, or any nearby police station."
