LAHAD DATU: Two Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) personnel here were injured by gunmen in the waters off Kunak this morning.

Lahad Datu MMEA director Maritime Commander Dr Suzanna Razali Chan said the two are Zainal Abad Komel, 45, who is also the captain of an MMEA vessel, and Leading Rate Prayrie De Cuella Jimin, 35.

Zainal was hurt in the left eye, and De Cuella Jimin sustained injuries in both hands from gunfire. Both are receiving treatment at Kunak Hospital.

Four other MMEA personnel were not injured.

Suzanna said three armed men in a blue boat with an outboard motor opened fire on the approaching enforcement vessel 0.2 nautical miles northeast of Kampung Pangi, Kunak.

The MMEA personnel shot back at the gunmen, who then sped away in the boat.

MMEA has deployed resources, including aircraft, to track down the gunmen.
