KUCHING: A car packed with six people and driven by a 24-year-old man with no driving licence crashed at Km72 on the Sri Aman-Kuching stretch of the Pan Borneo Highway yesterday, killing a 12-year-old boy passenger.

Police said the car went off the road and rolled over "several times" before landing in a small drain.The boy, from Kampung Semariang in Petra Jaya here, had been identified as Ally Nazrullah Abdullah.

The driver, from Kampung Bahagia in Sibu, was slightly injured, Sri Aman district police chief Deputy Superintendent P. Mathew Manggie said.

A front passenger, whom police identified as Zakaria Ellen, 32, of Kampung Astana Lot here, was also slightly injured but three rear seat passengers, including an infant, sustained serious injuries, according to Manggie.

Ally was one of the rear-seat passengers.

Manggie named the other passengers as Laila Ellen, 27, Muhammad Syukri Omarhan, 37, and Muhammad Qhairi Euzayr Mohamad Syukri, believed to be the infant son of Laila and Syukri.

All were admitted to Sri Aman Hospital for treatment.

Manggie said the driver is being investigated for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

If convicted, he faces a jail term of between two years and 10 years, and a fine between RM5,000 and RM20,000, or both.

He could also be disqualified from holding or obtaining a driving licence for a period of not less than three years from the date of the conviction.
