KUALA LUMPUR: The government's recognition of specialist doctors who trained through the Parallel Pathway Programme is vital in enhancing the nation's healthcare, said the Malaysian Medical Association (MMA).

Its president, Dr Azizan Abdul Aziz, commended the health minister in addressing the issues through proposed amendments to the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50).

"MMA extends its gratitude to Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad for his proactive efforts in addressing issues surrounding the recognition of the parallel pathway through proposed amendments to the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50).

"These endeavours are vital in upholding the highest standards of care within our nation," she told the New Straits Times.

Yesterday, the Health Ministry said graduates of the Parallel Pathway Programme would be recognised.

In a statement, the ministry would propose to the Cabinet to expedite amendments to the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50).

The ministry said this was to ensure that medical specialists who had trained through the programme would be registered and recognised.
