KUANTAN: By the time every one else celebrates Hari Raya Aidilfitri next week, Karim (not his real name) would be spending his 22nd year at the Penor Prison.

He is currently serving a 37-year prison term for raping his child. In the past, Karim used to work as a fisherman to support his family.

Speaking to Harian Metro, Karim said initially it was emotionally difficult whenever he heard the takbir for Aidilfitri echoing throughout the prison walls on the morning of the first day of Syawal.

He said the feeling of melancholy, and remembering his own mistakes added to the pressure.

However, after 22 years behind bars, he can finally accept the reality of life as a prisoner.

"Every Ramadan, memories of my children come to mind, even though I know they hate me for what I've done. They have the right to hate me."

Karim said he regretted his past mistakes and could only pray and seek forgiveness from the Almighty.

These days, Karim spends most of his time reading the Quran and performing Tarawih prayers. He also finds peace in performing his prayers.

He said all the activities happening in the world now seem so foreign to him after spending a part of his life in prison.

Karim will be spending 15 more Aidilfitri celebrations in prison before his release in 2039.
