KAJANG: Five friends including a married couple were charged at the magistrate's court here today with kidnapping a logistics and construction company director for ransom last month.

The accused are Ang Zi Teng, 24; Wong Chun Weng, 25; Ong Gim Yau, 28; and the couple Wong Shin Sean, 32, and Goh Chia Ying, 33.

All the accused nodded in understanding when the charges were read to them before magistrate Nik Siti Norazlini Nik Mohamed Faiz.

No plea was recorded from all the accused.

They are jointly accused of unlawfully confining or taking control of or guarding another person with the intention of obtaining ransom money as a condition for the release of 37-year-old victim.

They allegedly committed the offence near Dataran Jade, here, at 12.30am on Feb 17.

The offence falls under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961 read together with Section 34 of the Penal Code which carries maximum 40 years imprisonment and canning upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Norfarhanim Abdul Halim prosecuted while counsels K. Mahendren, Eryanie Abdul Rahim and P. Prakasam appeared for the accused.

The court did not offer any bail as the case falls under the non-bailable provision.

The court also fixed May 17 for mention.
