KUALA LUMPUR: The All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia (APPGM) on Integrity, Governance and Anti-Corruption urges the government to expedite institutional reforms.

Its chairman Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh (PH-Ledang) said the group agreed for the reforms to be done in phases, with priority on four out of eight reform proposals.

The four are setting up a public prosecutor's office seperate from the Attorney-General's Chambers, amending the Whistleblower Protection Act, reforming Parliament through the Parliamentary Services Act and enacting a freedom of information act.

"We have agreed for the reform proposals to be executed in phases, with the four in the first phase," he said at a press conference in the Parliament building today.

He said the decision was made after engagements with stakeholders.

Asked how soon the government should implement the reform, Syed Ibrahim said: "We must be smart and not keep everything in one basket, only to have trouble convincing parliamentarians to support this legislation.

"So, we leave it to the government, but we believe that the four can happen within this term.

"The Parliament Services Act may come into effect earlier than the rest, maybe by the next sitting.

"The rest, maybe by this year. Overall, we hope it can happen during this term."

The other four reform proposals are the introduction of the Procurement Act and Political Funding Act, amending the Judicial Appointments Commission Act and full implementation of The National Anti-Corruption Plan.
