KOTA BARU: Seventy-six students of a secondary school in Kuala Krai here came down with food poisoning after experiencing diarrhoea and vomiting last week.

Kelantan health director Datuk Dr Zaini Hussin said the 76 were boarding school students.

He said the students are believed to have come down with the illness eating a dish of 'ayam masak merah' on March 14.

"The department has received a report on the food poisoning incident involving 157 secondary students.

"But out of the figure, 76 were affected. We suspect it was caused by the chicken," he told reporters when visiting a Ramadan bazaar at Lembah Sireh here today.

Dr Zaini said the 76 students, however, only sought outpatient treatment at the Kuala Krai hospital.

He added the school management as well as the food operator were advised to make sure that the food is cooked properly to prevent a repeat incident.

On another note, he said 80 compound notices were issued to traders operating at Ramadan bazaar throughout the state for breaching food regulations.

He said the figure was recorded as of yesterday, with a majority of them issued to food handlers for failing to wear aprons.

During the period, he added the department has collected about RM8,000 in fines.
