TAWAU: The Sabah Customs Department has confiscated approximately 10.79kg of suspected methamphetamine during a raid at a courier service premise at Jalan Bakau, Sabah First Info reported.

Its assistant director-general Datuk Mohd Nasir Deraman said the operation was conducted by the Tawau Enforcement Operation Team on March 9, following intelligence about drug distribution activities using courier services in the area.

The raid uncovered a brown box labelled as fishing equipment, which upon inspection contained 10 packages marked '168 Freeso-Dried Durian', filled with clear crystals suspected to be methamphetamine.

The total drugs seized weighed 10.79 kg with an estimated value of RM356,070.

Mohd Nasir said the syndicate's modus operandi involved transporting drugs via land courier services from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau. The syndicate opted for 'self collection' at the delivery address to avoid detection by authorities.

Following the operation, the manager of the courier company was detained for further investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

This seizure, as highlighted by Mohd Nasir, prevented the distribution of drugs to over 50,000 potential users. He also urged the public to assist the department in combating smuggling crimes involving cigarettes, alcohol, drugs, and other contraband.
