KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 945 students have been accused under the Universities and University Colleges Act (AUKU) 1971 for academic misconduct.
The Higher Education Ministry said this includes cheating and bringing notes during examinations between 2018 and 2023.
It added that a total of 1,049 students were involved in the non-academic misconduct category.
"There are two categories of misconduct under AUKU, namely academic and non-academic misconduct.
"Non-academic misconduct is divided into several categories such as drug-related offenses, social or moral offenses, bullying and fighting, among others," the ministry said in a parliamentary written reply on March 18.
The ministry said this in response to Choi Yui Hui (PH-Raub) who enquired the ministry to state the number of students that have been accused under AUKU.
At the same time, the ministry said the act enacted in 1971 also aimed to standardise and centralise administrative matters related to public universities under the ministry.
"The act also aims to establish, maintain and administer universities as well as university colleges.
"At the same time, it serves as the source of authority for the establishment and governance of 18 public universities and serves as an act that connects the accountability of higher education institutions to the government and society."
