KUALA LUMPUR: Pas wants the government to take stricter action for insults against Islam following the sale of socks with the name of "Allah" at KK Mart stores.
Pas consumer affairs committee chairman Khairil Nizam Khirudin said such insults provoke anger among Malaysian Muslims, particularly during Ramadan, as the word "Allah" holds the utmost significance for them.
Khairil stressed the need for both KK Mart Group and manufacturer Xin Jian Chang to face stronger consequences, regardless of their public apologies, to emphasise the importance of respecting Islam's sensitivities.
"We don't want it to become a continuing trend in this country, where the sanctity of Islam is mocked and followed only by apologies, but then other similar incidents occur as if no firm action can be taken against those involved," he said.
Yesterday, KK Mart Group issued a public apology over the sale of socks bearing the word "Allah". Despite this, there have been calls for Muslims to boycott the convenience store chain.
Khairil said the Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry and the Islamic Development Malaysia Department (Jakim) must work together to tighten provisions in the Trade Descriptions Act 2011 related to the sale of goods involving the sensitivity of Islam in Malaysia.
