GEORGE TOWN: The Penang government is in talks with the Federal Government on adopting it waste management law.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, however, said no decision has been made on adopting the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act 2007 (Act 672).

"Representatives from the Solid Waste Management and Public Cleansing Corporation (SWCorp) briefed the state executive council members a few weeks ago.

"So far, we only agree to have further discussions about this matter but have not decided on anything," he told newsmen here today (March 14).

It was reported that the Housing and Local Government Ministry was in talks with Selangor and Penang about the adoption of the Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act.

Minister Nga Kor Ming said that if both states agreed, they would join the other seven states that had adopted the act.

The Act ensures uniformity in law for the regulation of the management of solid waste and public cleansing.

Asked why Penang did not adopt the Act before this, Chow said it was only now that the federal government initiated the discussion with the state.

Earlier, Chow attended the Penang Future Foundation 2023 awards presentation, where 43 students received the Penang Scholar award and another eight the Mutiara Scholar award.

To date, 700 students have received the Penang Future Foundation scholarship awards covering undergraduate degrees in a diverse range of fields.
