JOHOR BARU: A total of five million students will begin their 2024/2025 academic school session today and tomorrow.

Education director-general Adnan Azman said the figure ranged from preschoolers up to Form Five students across the country.

He said a total of 1.44 million students from states in Group A began their 2024/2025 academic session today (Mar 10).

Group A covers schools in Johor, Kedah, Terengganu and Kelantan. Group B, which will begin tomorrow, covers schools in Melaka, Negri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Labuan and Putrajaya.

"For the second year in running, the Education Ministry is implementing the first week of the new session without academic lessons, particularly to familiarise Year One and Form One students with their new environment.

"The first week of the new school session will be filled with various suitable programmes.

"The ministry wants students to attend school in a joyful atmosphere, allowing them to quickly adapt to their school ecosystem and culture, while also interacting with teachers and peers," he said.

Azman said this after inspecting the first day of schooling at SMK Sultan Ismail (SSI). Present was Johor Education and Information Committee chairman Aznan Tamin.

In Johor, a total of 602,619 primary and secondary school students began their 2024/2025 academic session today.
