KUCHING: A senior officer of the Malaysian army was summoned to the Lundu district police headquarters today for allegedly hitting his subordinate, which left the latter with injuries.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said police recorded the senior officer's statement following a police report that was lodged by the victim at the Bau police station on March 4 at 1.27am.

"The Malaysian Armed Forces have been very cooperative in this investigation," Mancha said via WhatsApp message today.

Yesterday, the army established an internal investigation board to identify the cause of the alleged abuse of power and use of force by a senior officer in the Malaysian Infantry Brigade stationed in Sarawak.

In a statement, it said that actions would be taken against the senior officer if found guilty of misconduct and abuse of power, in accordance with the army's regulations and directives.

Army Chief, General Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan has taken the allegations seriously and would seek to identify the cause of the incident, promising no compromise on the perpetrator if found guilty, regardless of rank and position.

At present, the senior officer has been relieved of his duties to allow the army to conduct a thorough and comprehensive investigation.

According to the police report, a junior officer alleged that he was slapped on the left side of his face and kicked in the stomach by a senior officer, resulting in injuries to the soft tissue above the eye and blunt trauma.

It is understood that the incident occurred on March 1 while a group of officers was undergoing formation-level training.

The case is still under police investigation.
