KUANTAN: The newly launched Malaysia Mineral Academy Pahang (AMMP) will serve as a one-stop centre offering education and mineral industry-based technical services for industry players.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said AMMP, the first in the country, will provide coordinated and systematic information on mineral development for Pahang and the country.

"Malaysia is rich in mineral resources and proper knowledge will ensure the minerals are well managed to benefit the state and country. Previously, there was no formal system (on minerals), so we need a permanent solution and not ad hoc (short-term) measures.

"In the past, we might have only been able to identify gold as we (recognised) it but were unable to identify other minerals, including bauxite soil and silica sand. "AMMP will help educate and provide professional training programmes for students and industry players to help them obtain accurate information about the minerals," he told reporters after launching AMMP's campus at a hotel here today.

Wan Rosdy said AMMP would offer formal education to help position Pahang as a hub for the mineral industry in the country.

"We need a solid foundation to ensure success, so the academy offers academic programmes, short courses and technical services in the mineral industry. I am sure the academy will benefit various quarters and the Pahang government will continuously monitor AMMP's progress," he said.

He said AMMP was operating a temporary campus at the Lipis Centrepoint before they obtained a permanent location to set up their academy building.

Last year, Wan Rosdy said AMMP, which is located within the Lipis Integrated Technology Park, will focus on education, training and research to develop new technologies and produce a skilled workforce in the mineral industry.
