KUALA TERENGGANU: A former Form Six student was sentenced to 30 years in prison by the High Court for murdering her friend four years ago.

The decision was made by Judge Datuk Hassan Abdul Ghani after the accused, Siti Nur Athirah Azmi, 23, pleaded guilty to the charge.

Siti Nur Athirah was accused of murdering Siti Nur Surya Ismail, 19, at a house in Kampung Lubuk Batu, Hulu Terengganu between 8.30am and 9.30am on Nov 1, 2020.

She was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder, which provides the death sentence or imprisonment for up to 40 years. If a person is not sentenced to death, they will receive at least 12 strokes of the cane.

The court ordered the prison sentence to start from the date of arrest, which was on Nov 2, 2020.

Prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Amer Abu Bakar Abdullah and Mohd Khairuddin Idris, while the accused was represented by lawyer Azura Ghazali.

In 2020, it was reported that a teenage girl was stabbed to death in front of her bedridden mother.
