KUALA LUMPUR: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) will monitor 6,000 employers that recorded the highest number of accidents last year through the Ops Cegah initiative, which will be launched from March 1 to 15, 2024.
Socso chief executive officer Datuk Seri Dr. Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said that it visited 1,078 employers throughout the past year.
The results of these visits and strategic collaborations between institutions and NGOs led to an 83.6 per cent decrease in accident rates recorded by 931 employers.
"The synergistic efforts continue through various means, such as phone calls, one-to-one consultations, visits to employers' places, advocacy programmes, and more to ensure that undesirable incidents continue to decrease," he said in a statement today.
According to Socso statistics for 2023, there were 82,876 accidents recorded, with the majority being industrial accidents at 53.6 per cent (44,422 cases), while 46.4 per cent (38,454 cases) involved trip accidents.
Of the total accidents recorded, 1,060 were fatal accidents with 29.2 percent (310 deaths) involving industrial accidents.
Travel accidents accounted for 70.8 per cent (750 deaths), with an average of two deaths recorded per day throughout 2023 involving employees' accidents on their way to the workplace.
"Ops Cegah, launched in 2022, aims to increase awareness among employers regarding occupational safety and health.
"It focuses on implementing accident prevention measures for employees in line with the 'Vision Zero Socso', which strives for zero occupational injuries and diseases at work," he said.
Ops Cegah 2024 is strategically implemented in collaboration with several key organisations, including the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), the Royal Malaysia Police, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), the Road Transport Department (RTD), and the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF).
