ALOR STAR: A 19-year-old died while her younger brother sustained severe head injuries after their motorcycle was hit by a lorry at the junction of Kampung Parit Buaya, Gunung Keriang Road, today.

The incident occurred at 2.10pm, claiming the life of the 19-year-old who was riding a SYM Sport motorcycle. Her five-year-old brother was rushed to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) for treatment.

Kota Setar district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Shukri Mat Akhir said both siblings were from Kampung Semarang, Mukim Gunung, Alor Janggus, here.

"Initial investigations found that the motorcycle ridden by the two siblings was coming from the traffic light direction of Alor Janggus towards the traffic light of Gunung Keriang while the lorry was from the right side of the mini tar road junction to the left.

"The accident is believed to have occurred when the motorcycle was moving straight before the lorry crossed from the junction in front of the motorcycle's path.

"The incident caused the motorcycle rider to be unable to avoid and collided with the left rear side of the lorry," he said.

Ahmad Shukri said the motorcycle rider died at the scene due to severe head injuries, and her body was sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) forensics department for further action.

He said the victim's younger brother, who suffered bleeding in the head, was being treated at HSB.

"The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

"So far, the 59-year-old lorry driver has surrendered himself at the police station and detained for further investigation."
