PUTRAJAYA: The Immigration Department will open a passport office at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, Sabah, scheduled to commence operations in June.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the office is currently undergoing renovations.

"We will open the passport office at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, currently in the process of preparation, and we expect it to start operating in June.

"This is another commitment from us to facilitate dealings with the public by expanding our operational offices, without increasing staff positions," he said after officiating the opening of the Shaftbury Passport Office at Menara Shaftbury, here today.

He said the Shaftbury Passport Office is the 78th passport issuance office and only accepts online renewal applications.

"Now we have four offices handling passport renewals online, three of them are in Wangsa Maju, Kajang, and Kelana Jaya," he said.

Meanwhile, he said a total of 3,057,825 passports were issued last year compared to 2,574,435 in 2022, reflecting an increase of 20 per cent.
