ALOR STAR: An auxiliary firefighter from the Pokok Sena Fire and Rescue Station suffered an injury to the little finger of his left hand while carrying out firefighting operations in Langgar here.

Muhammad Riyard Harris Ramlan, in his 20s, was rushed to Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital (HSB) aboard an Emergency Medical Rescue Services vehicle for treatment.

During the incident, Riyard was fighting a fire which razed a shop house and 10 motorcycles in Kampung Tengah, Jalan Tualang, Langgar, today.

Pokok Sena Fire and Rescue station chief Bakar Saad said crewmen led by officer Mohd Shahrin Musa and firefighters from Alor Setar Fire Station were dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at 3.29am.

"The premises was already engulfed in a fire when the responders arrived at the, resulting in 90 per cent of the shop house. The fire also destroyed 10 motorcycles inside the premises," he said in a statement.

Bakar said the auxiliary firefighter suffered an injury to the little finger of his left hand while attempting to open the door of the shop house to extinguish the fire.

"He was rushed to HSB and received outpatient treatment for the injury," he said.

Bakar added that the firefighters subsequently put out the fire with the assistance of a nearby volunteer fire brigade.

Investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
