KOTA BARU: Pas will study the impact of the nullification of the Kelantan syariah criminal enactment in the next party meeting.

Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said Pas and Perikatan Nasional would give serious attention to this issue.

"Pas has regretted the decision made by the Federal Court recently because the decision has a big impact on Muslims who are trying to strengthen Islamic syariah law.

"Pas understands that most states have their own legal advisers and special committees to review law before it is brought to the state assembly and gets the consent of the ruler in the respective states.

"Our wish is only to overcome the loopholes and the weaknesses in the civil court," he said.

Tuan Ibrahim, who is also Kubang Kerian member of parliament, said the party would also like to urge the federal government to immediately amend the Constitution so that the position of the Syariah court is guaranteed.

"By amending the Constitution, it will empower the Syariah court in accordance with Allah's command. Pas guarantees that we will give our fully support to this effort," he added.

Yesterday, the Terengganu government said it would examine all aspects of the state's syariah law after the Federal Court ruled that 16 out of the 18 provisions under the Kelantan syariah criminal enactment were unconstitutional.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar had said this was to ensure that the state's syariah law did not contradict federal law.
