KUALA LUMPUR: The country is currently experiencing the final phase of the northeast monsoon, which is expected to last until the end of March, the Meteorological Department said.

The department, in a statement, said during this phase, cloud formation and rainfall distribution were generally lower in most places, notably in the northern areas of the peninsula, including Perak, Pahang and Kelantan.

The prolonged absence of rain will then lead to hotter and drier weather than usual, it added.

"The current hot weather experienced during this time is a recurring phenomenon that occurs every year from February to May," the Meteorological Department said.

"During this period, the daily maximum temperature can exceed 35°C in the early evening.

"So far, the highest temperature recorded by the department's main meteorological station is 36.9°C in Chuping, Perlis, on Feb 8.

"Due to the strong El Nino phenomenon affecting the world at this time, it is expected that the daily maximum temperature in our country may be higher in most places."

The department also advised the public to take precautionary measures during the hot weather conditions.

"Everyone is advised to take steps to conserve water and limit the time spent outside buildings to avoid exposure to the hot weather.

"Follow the recommendations issued by the Health Ministry to maintain good health.

"The department constantly monitors the weather conditions throughout the country.

"The public is encouraged to be aware of weather changes and obtain the latest weather information and warnings through the official website, myCuaca application, and the Meteorological Department's social media channels."
