KOTA BARU: An increasing number of Malaysian VIPs, including those holding the title 'Datuk', are heading to Songkhla to get married.

Deputy president of the Narathiwat Islamic Religious Council Abdul Aziz Che Mamat said many Malaysian couples have opted for Songkhla since last year instead of Narathiwat province for their weddings.

Abdul Aziz highlighted privacy as the primary reason for this shift in preference.

He explained that previously, couples from Malaysia, both prominent figures and ordinary citizens, would marry at the Narathiwat Islamic Religious Council. However, over the past year, around 95 per cent of Malaysian couples visiting the council have been ordinary citizens.

Now, VIPs, celebrities, politicians, and wealthy individuals, including those with the title 'Datuk', prefer traveling to Songkhla to marry at the religious council there.

Abdul Aziz noted that these individuals prioritise privacy and expedited marriage procedures due to personal reasons, prompting them to choose Songkhla.

He mentioned that most couples traveling to Songkhla come from the Klang Valley, as well as the Northern and Eastern states of Malaysia.

In Songkhla province, hundreds of Malaysian couples, including those seeking polygamous marriages, tie the knot at five different locations within the province each month.

Abdul Aziz said that compared to Narathiwat, the number of couples getting married in Songkhla has significantly increased.
