SEPANG: The country's leaders who have extensive wealth overseas but shy away from investigations of the source of it are undeserving of their titles, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said leaders should face any investigations coming their way no matter the risk.

"If I, as the Finance Minister, have warehouses of money up to billions of ringgit all over the world, (money in) banks all over Africa and no one dared to question me, just mere whispers,is undeserving to be a leader in this country.

"If (you) want to be a leader, (you) have to face the wind no matter the risk because it is the money for our children's schools that was taken away and the extra allowances from the police and the firemen," he said in his speech at the National Good Governance Symposium 2024, here, today.

Anwar said he has no tolerance for anyone under his administration who are involved in corruption, adding that he has informed Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Zuki Ali on the matter.

Anwar added that corruption is not the case of an individual getting rich but it's about the public funds that were stolen.

Anwar also applauded the MACC, police, the Attorney-General Chambers and the Auditor-General who are ready to embrace change and eliminate corruption.

He cited the recent drug bust in Sabah where the police had detained the head of the biggest drug-ring and recent probes by the MACC involving big names.

"When it comes to increasing the wages of our civil servants by RM40 to RM60, it needs to be scrutinised, but when someone sweep away billions of ringgit, no one question it.

"Not only that, there are also those who defended them saying it's an old case and the perpetrator is already of old age and enough with revenge.

"If we don't start (investigating) with bravery, we won't be able to save this country," he said.

He was launching the National Good Governance Strengthenimg Movement (Gerakan Pemantapan Tatakelola Nasional) under the First Prime Minister's instruction.

The guideline is aimed at promoting good governance and eliminate corruption and is chaired by Zuki.
