KUCHING: The Covid-19 outbreak remains concerning in Sarawak with 13 deaths recorded due to the virus throughout 2023.

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, highlighted that this includes four new deaths reported in Epidemiological Week 51, from Dec 17-23, 2023, with three cases in Kuching and one case in Miri.

Embarking on his role as the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee chairman, he noted a nearly 50 per cent increase in confirmed infection cases statewide during the same period.

"In Epidemiological Week 51, a total of 942 cases were reported, marking an increase of 311 cases or 49.29 per cent compared to the previous Epidemiological Week, which had 631 cases.

Four deaths were confirmed to be infected with the new Omicron variants, namely JN.1 and HK.3," he stated.

He shared this information in a message during the new year celebration yesterday.

Therefore, he advised the public to remain vigilant, take necessary precautions, and adhere to the guidelines set by the Health Ministry (MOH) to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

"This cautious approach is especially important among the elderly, children, and those with comorbidities. Signs of cases reemerging with sub variants HK.3 and JN.1 are now detected in the state," he added.
