SEBERANG PRAI: The first-ever gateway in Seberang Prai has illuminated the northern entry to Penang, marking its inauguration by Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.
The event was graced by dignitaries including state executive councillor for Infrastructure, Transportation, and DigitalZairil Khir Johari, Bertam assemblyman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican, and Seberang Prai Mayor Datuk Azhar Arshad, along with local officials and residents of Kepala Batas.
Seberang Prai City Council, in a Facebook post on Jan 30, said that the gateway project at Kepala Batas marks the first of its kind and is part of three projects endorsed by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government in 2022.
This structure now stands as the northern gateway to the state, symbolising the entry into Penang. Construction commenced on March 22, 2023, and concluded on Dec 21, 2023, with funding provided by both the ministry and council.
"This gateway features a construction design that embraces minimalist curvature and incorporates a 'lighting pattern' design, adorned with lamps, logos, and notably, the special use of solar energy to power the LED lights and logos at night.
"Additionally, the replica is enhanced with lighting touches through the installation of logos and box lettering, adding an artistic flair. The gateway's design also includes a replica of the Penang Bridge, a landmark for visitors to Penang, symbolising the connection between Seberang Prai and the island part," the council said in its post.
The council also added that it hopes the new landmark will bestow a unique identity to Kepala Batas while also invigorating the tourism industry in Seberang Prai, aligning with the Penang2030 vision of creating "A Family-Focused Green and Smart State That Inspires The Nation."
