JASIN: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has called for people not to be in a hurry to comment on the proposal to do away with pensions for the civil service.

The unity government spokesman said this was because nothing had been decided yet as things were still being scrutinised by the government.

He said there had been no specific statement on the new remuneration scheme for the public service, which includes the proposal for the removal of the pension scheme, besides one issued by the Public Service Department (PSD) that a new method for the permanent appointments of civil servants would be ntroduced.

"So, my stand is that we should give space to the relevant parties to explain things. Today, the prime minister said that (the government would give) a full explanation to put things in context.

"Therefore, if we want to comment, we should be fair and wait for the full explanation," he told reporters after presenting Tabung Kasih@Hawana donations in Kampung Pulai, Serkam.

Also present were Serkam assemblyman Datuk Zaidi Attan, Bernama editor-in-chief and acting chief executive officer Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, Broadcasting director-general Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman and Hawana project director Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also Bernama News Services deputy editor-in-chief.

Earlier this week, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had said the recruitment of new civil servants on a contract basis was for a short period before the cabinet approved a new policy of non-pensionable permanent employment.

New hires, he had said, would instead contribute to the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and Social Security Organisation (Socso).
