SERI KEMBANGAN: The local council elections are not a priority for the Housing and Local Government Ministry.

Its minister, Nga Kor Ming, said he will instead focus on what should be done for the wellbeing of the citizens.

"My answer has always been consistent. Our country has just recovered from political instability.

"Now is the time to cool down the political heat and focus on things that can bring benefit to the people," he said after his working visit to the Pasar Bazar Rakyat Seri Kembangan here, today.

Earlier this month, Kuala Lumpur DAP cahirman Tan Kok Wai called for the government to reinstate the local elections in the capital city to uphold democracy in the federal territories.

He had said reintroducing local elections in Kuala Lumpur would provide sustainability, while giving the residents the right to select their city council representatives.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said she would discuss the proposal with Nga, adding that an in-depth study was required if the propsal was approved.

Asked if he had discussed the matter with Dr Zaliha, Nga said: "I am always interacting with Dr Zaliha, my older sister. We work as a team. My answer and hers have been consistent."
