KUALA LUMPUR: The Kemaman District Health Office has launched an investigation over a suspected case of food poisoning at the Perasing Rest and Recreation (RnR).

Terengganu State Health director Datuk Dr Kasemani Embong in a statement said the district health office had investigated the premises involved to identify the actual cause related to the issue.

"Several food samples, equipment swabs, and food handlers were taken to aid in the investigation. The department is currently awaiting the results of these samples.

"This comes after the authorities received a notification about a case of food poisoning involving a 54-year-old woman who experienced symptoms after consuming food purchased at Perasing Rest and Recreation (RnR), Kemaman.

"The individual began experiencing symptoms of stomach pain, diarrhoea, and vomiting after consuming food suspected to be spoiled."

She said the department took food poisoning cases seriously and advised food handlers to always prioritise cleanliness and the safety of food and beverages sold.

"This is to ensure that food is prepared in a clean and safe manner to prevent cases of food poisoning.

"The public should consistently practice food safety by selecting hygienic food premises.

"The public is also advised to follow the concept of 'look, smell, and taste' before consuming to avoid eating spoiled food."

The department also conveyed its condolences to the family of the woman who died following a suspected case of food poisoning where she had consumed a spoiled sandwich at the said RnR.

Earlier, the New Straits Times reported that a woman lost her life just two days after consuming a spoiled sandwich.

According to a Facebook post by the niece of the deceased, her late aunt suffered from food poisoning and was subsequently referred to the intensive care unit (ICU) at Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu, where she was pronounced dead.

The woman, who had travelled from Johor to Terengganu for her child's university registration, stopped to eat at the Perasing Rest and Recreation (RnR), where she purchased the sandwich.
