KUALA LUMPUR: Former Bernama editor-in-chief Datuk Yong Soo Heong has been elected as the new Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) president, with New Straits Times group editor Farrah Naz Karim being appointed as his deputy.

After MPI's extraordinary general meeting today, the MPI administrative council also appointed Star Media Group managing editor Brian Martin as the vice-president.

In expressing his gratitude, Yong, who now serves as The Weekly Echo's editor-in-chief, said more training programmes would help make MPI be more inclusive and relevant to the ever-expanding media landscape.

"These training programmes aim to produce more journalists who are of quality and have high capabilities to enhance the standards of journalism in our country," he said.

Yong added that with the cooperation and involvement of all parties, the MPI would be inviting more media outlets and organisations to join as members.

The MPI consists of six administrative council members, including the three newly appointed positions.

The term of the council members extends until the next MPI general meeting, slated to take place before mid next year.
