PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said he was taken aback by the announcement that he was set to become the new Defence Minister.

"I'm still in a bit of a shock by the outcome of the cabinet reshuffle, as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today," he said.

Khaled, who is currently Higher Education Minister, said he was reserving any further comments for now on his new role.

"We'll have to wait for the official ceremony, and only then will it be official," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the ministry and Malaysian Academic Consortium Sdn Bhd today.

The cabinet reshuffle announced by the prime minister this morning saw a number of new faces as well as a switch in portfolios for some ministers.

Mohamed Khaled will assume the Defence Minister role, replacing Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, who will helm the Foreign Ministry.

Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, currently the Foreign Minister, will become the Higher Education Minister.
