KUALA LUMPUR: The necessary documents for the charges against Dr Gonzalo Stampa, responsible for the US$14.9 billion "Sulu Award" fraud in the Madrid Criminal Court, Spain, have been filed by both prosecution and defence.

However, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said that there is still no date that has been decided by the Madrid Criminal Court for the decision on two charges against Stampa.

"The case has already been completed as both sides have submitted. However, there is no date for the decision yet," she said in a press conference via Google Meet this evening.

Further commenting on the details of the proceeding, she said that only one witness from Malaysia was called by the Madrid Criminal Court, Malaysian Ambassador to Spain Datuk Akmal Che Mustafa, who filed the complaint against Stampa.

"So that was the only witness to confirm that the complaint was being made officially against him for his behaviour," she added.

Azalina said that the Spanish court has charged Stampa on two counts of charges namely contempt of court, for going against the country's judicial repeated warning against him, also for unqualified practicing as he was an illegitimate arbitrator.

"Following the said annulment of Mr. Stampa's appointment, the Madrid High Court of Justice repeatedly ordered Mr. Stampa, in writing, to immediately bring an end to the purported arbitration.

"However, Mr. Stampa was recalcitrant in disobeying the orders of the court and blatantly undermined the rule of law," she added.

Earlier today, it was reported that the criminal charges against Stampa, responsible for the US$14.9 billion "Sulu Award" fraud in the Madrid Criminal Court, Spain, today signify the commencement of justice for the 32 million people of Malaysia.

Describing today as a significant day for Malaysia, Azalina said that Malaysia has full confidence in the Spanish justice system.

Azalina said that Stampa faces serious criminal charges for contempt of court and unprofessional conduct without qualifications, brought by the Prosecutors' Offices of Spain and Malaysia because he openly and intentionally defied several binding orders from the Madrid High Court.
