KUALA LUMPUR: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) office here has so far issued 602 cards to refugees from Palestine.
Deputy Foreign Minister Datuk Mohamad Alamin said the group would be given necessary assistance, including in education and Covid-19 vaccinations.
"The government has agreed to cover the study fees of Palestinian students at public universities here, while those studying at private institutes would receive discounts of between 10 and 100 per cent," he said in his winding up speech during the debate on the Palestine-Israel conflict in the Dewan Negara.
Mohamad said apart from the delivery of humanitarian aid, in which the third batch would be shipped on Dec 18, he said the government planned to set up a Malaysian Humanitarian Hub in Egypt.
"Foreign Ministry had submitted a diplomatic note to the Egyptian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur on Nov 23 for consideration.
"We would like to thank everyone who had come forward to extend help and contribute to the Humanitarian Trust Fund for the People of Palestine (AAKRP)."
Mohamad said Malaysia remained steadfast in expressing its stand on the Palestine-Israel conflict, while extending humanitarian aid to Palestinians. He said Malaysia is also working with like-minded countries in bringing the issue of Israeli atrocities to the International Court of Justice.
Senator Hussin Ismail had earlier submitted the motion to debate the issue in accordance with the Standing Order 17(1) of the Dewan Negara, which was allowed by Senate president Tan Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
