KOTA BARU: The monsoon season in Kelantan claimed its first victim after an 18-month-old boy drowned in a river at Kampung Kenari today.

Kelantan police chief, Datuk Muhamad Zaki Harun who confirmed the case said the incident happened at about noon.

"I can confirm that police have received a report on a drowning case in Kampung Kenari and the first flood victim reported in Kelantan since flood hit the state last Sunday.

"Although the Kota Baru district was not hit by floods but the incident happened in the monsoon season and when the river was rising due to the heavy rain," he said when contacted.

The boy's family realised he was missing at about noon and suspected he had fell into the river which located behind their home.

They then alerted the authorities. A rescue and search team comprised police and firemen were mounted to locate the boy.

They found his body inside the river about 1.40pm. The body was sent to the hospital for post-mortem.
