KUALA LUMPUR: Yang Dipertua Negeri Melaka Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam and the Raja Puan Muda of Perlis Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil were today awarded the doctorate degree by Universiti Malaya (UM) for their respective scholarly research.

This was announced by the Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah, who is UM Chancellor, on the first day of the university's 63rd Convocation Ceremony, today.

Mohd Ali was awarded a Doctorate in History and Archeology by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences for his research on "The Government's Role in Empowering Leadership and Socioeconomics of Youth in Malaysia, 1963-2013."

Tuanku Hajah Lailatul Shahreen was awarded a Doctorate in Syariah Law by the Academy of Islamic Studies for her research with the title "The Importance of Islamic Regal Leadership in Zakat Delivery to the Asnaf in Perlis."

Earlier, Sultan Nazrin announced the appointment of former Federal Court Judge Tan Sri Zainun Ali as the pro-chancellor of UM. The appointment took effect on March 1 this year.

A total of 8,326 UM graduates are expected to receive their diploma and degree scrolls at this year's convocation ceremony to be held in 15 sessions from today until Dec 2.

They comprised 500 doctorate students, master's degree (2,642), bachelor's degrees (4,186) and 998 Advanced Diploma, Executive Diploma and Diploma graduates. --BERNAMA
