KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia-Indonesia Brotherhood of Journalists (ISWAMI) today extended its congratulations to Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on his first year as Malaysia's Prime Minister, emphasising his pivotal role in fortifying the enduring relationship between the two nations.

It noted Anwar's widespread recognition and appreciation among the people of Indonesia at all levels, and applauded the prime minister's policies in upholding critical thinking and journalistic freedom.

"This is in accordance with Anwar's emphasis on the crucial role of journalists, not just as recorders of ideas but as initiators of ideas based on values, as expressed during the National Journalists' Day (Hawana) 2023 celebration in Ipoh, Perak, in May.

"The prime minister's dedication and confidence provide the necessary space for journalists to fulfil their responsibilities and obligations to the best of their abilities," ISWAMI said in a joint statement issued by ISWAMI Malaysia President Datuk Mokhtar Hussain and ISWAMI Indonesia President Asro Kamal Rokan.

Additionally, ISWAMI expressed support for the proposed establishment of the Malaysia Media Council with the aim of enhancing the regulation and professional standards of journalism.

"Hopefully, it is given priority so that it becomes a reality soon. The creation of the council is seen as crucial in building public resilience against digital and subversive threats," it said.

ISWAMI also congratulated Anwar on his one-year achievement in leading Malaysia.

Established in 2005 by senior journalists from Indonesia and Malaysia, ISWAMI serves as a bridge between the peoples of the two countries through information, understanding, and the fostering of friendship.
