MARAN: To enhance flood management across Pahang, the state government has setup five permanent relief centres with a cost of RM31 million to shelter evacuees.

The centres, which are the first of its kind in the country will be built in five districts namely Maran, Lipis, Kuantan, Pekan and Temerloh.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail said in the past, schools, public halls, mosques and buildings which were spared from the floods will be converted into temporary flood relief centres (PPS).

"In the future, flood victims can move into the centres. The first centre in Kampung Luit, Maran has been completed while the remaining four will be completed within the next one or two years," he told reporters after opening the Kampung Luit permanent relief centre here today.

Wan Rosdy said the centre in Kampung Luit built at a cost of RM650,300 can accommodate up to 24 families in case of floods.

Meanwhile, on the preparations for the Northeast Monsoon (MTL), Wan Rosdy said basic disaster relief items and food supplies have been sent to 159 forward bases and 856 flood relief centres have been identified to house the victims during the disaster.

Last year, Wan Rosdy said the Pahang government will purchase assets and build relief centres to further improve the effectiveness of flood management in all 11 districts across the state.

The construction of five helipads were among several measures in place to enhance flood management across Pahang.
